History

Liverpool Round Table number 8 (LRT8) was the 8th Round Table to be formed, following on from the successes of Norwich 1 being founded in 1927. LRT8 was chartered on 28th November 1928 and has been serving the community of Liverpool for over 80 years.

LRT8 was involved in the National Association of Round Tables from the very beginning and the National president in 1932 was a member of Liverpool 8. Since it’s inception, Liverpool 8 has been headed by Chairmen from all walks of life, supported by a series of Presidents.

Liverpool 41 Club

Liverpool 41 Club was founded in 1936 when a collection of Tablers who had reached the magic age of 41 decided to continue meeting on an informal basis. Liverpool originated the name 41 Club although Wolverhampton was also founded about the same time as an “Ex Tablers Club”. It is worth repeating the objectives of the club which are still the same many years later, these are as follows:

To continue and further develop the friendships formed under the auspices of the Round Tables movement.
To further the objects by meetings of any kind and by other activities.
To assist by service, or in any other way, the activities of the R.T.B.I.
To engage in any other activities decided upon by the Club in General Meeting.

The first Chairman of Liverpool 41 Club was Mr R H Roberts in the year 1936/37. The rules of the Liverpool 41 Club comprise of half a page and are a model of vagueness and clarity. Maybe after years in Table members do not need much guidance. The next major step in 41 Club history was the founding of the Association of Ex Tablers’ Club in May 1945. Representatives of four clubs met to discuss the forming of the Association. These representatives were J F Wellings from Liverpool, R T Lewis from Lytham, E Wainwright from Wakefield and J Shuter from London. John Shuter became the first National President followed by J F Wellings (1947/48), E Wainright (1948/49) and Percy A Shaw from Liverpool (1949/50). Liverpool can be rightly proud of its contribution to 41 Club in the same way as its contribution to Round Table.
